The company behind these graduate trainees is Umgeni Water. This company was made in 1974 in order to solve the water problem in South Africa. For your information, South Africa has a sanitation problem since a long time ago. Thus, Umgeni Water owns responsibility to provide water and sanitation services. Everything about the water in the country belongs to this company. It works under the Water Services Act (Act 108 of 1997) and the Public Finance Management Act (Act 1 of 1999). These acts are also categorized as a National Government Business Enterprise. So, this is a big company that brings many needs for South Africans. The company has to report what they are doing to the Department of Water Affairs through the Chairman of the Board and the Chief Executive.
What the company does:
- Provide water services, according to the Water Services Act in section 29.
- Supply untreated or non-potable water to end-users who do not use the water for household purposes,
- Perform water conservation functions.

The main customer of the Umgeni Water is in KwaZulu-Natal. The company has been providing this area over the years. It claims the operational area of 21 155 square kilometres.
We are back to the Umgeni Water Graduate Trainees for engineering. For your information, the main areas of engineering in regard to this programme are civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. This programme will provide temporary contract to the successful candidates. They will work and live in Pietermaritzburg where one of the customers of the company. This trainee programme is designed for reporting to graduate program co-ordinator. Of course, you will be trained through experiential training first before reporting some information to certain position.
The job duty that you must complete is to successfully demonstrate all proficiencies as determined by ECSA for the graduate development programme in their respective disciplines. Here are the minimum requirements that are eligible to send their qualification as follow:
- BSC in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical and Electrical Engineering.
- An unendorsed code 08/ EB driver’s licence is a compulsory requirement.

- Has knowledge of engineering principles and has an ability to apply this knowledge
- An ability to communicate well at all levels
- An ability to plan and organise workloads effectively and enhance performance.
